A man in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur has been charged more than Rs 128 crores for electricity bill of his house. According to the man, he has been charged a huge amount despite his low consumption of electricity. When confronted with the electricity department, the officials at the office asked the man to pay the complete amount. The power supply to the man's house has been cut as he was unable to pay the amount charged by the electricity office.
The bill sent to Shamim by the electricity department is of Rs. 128, 45, 95,444 for a home connection of 2 kilowatt.
Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in the House, Swait Malik of the BJP highlighted that power tariffs vary across states. He said while one has to pay Rs 8 per unit of electricity in Punjab, consumers in neighbouring states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir were paying much less.
The UPPCL has already submitted the proposed new power tariff structure for 2019-20 to the UP Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) for vetting and final approval.
The proposed amendment bill will include penalty provisions, stricter enforcement of PPAs and RPOs, Power minister R.K. Singh said.
