Dozens of buildings were damaged in Indonesia, including Islamic boarding schools, a hospital and other public facilities. Also damaged were roads and bridges, and parts of the region experienced power blackouts.
Indonesia earthquake: The tremors were felt at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). It also caused panic in the greater Jakarta area, where high-rises swayed and some people evacuated.
The earthquake took place around 9:30 am and was located 10 kilometres below the ground.
The earthquake occurred at 12.55 am on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Centre for Seismology said.
In the recent past, the people of the region have experienced three such jolts wherein the ground shook and things kept in the shelves at houses fell down.
On Monday night, an earthquake of 5.4 magnitude hit Sikkim with tremors being also felt in the states of Assam, West Bengal and Bihar.
