Extreme cold conditions have taken over the whole of North India. Reportedly, most stations in the capital have recorded severe cold conditions continuously for 12 days. Delhi had also experienced cold wave spell in four years -1997, 1998, 2003, and 2014.
The weather department has predicted severe cold conditions in Delhi over the weekend. Meanwhile, authorities in Haryana have ordered the closure of all schools in the state in view of intense coldwave. In Haryana, day temperatures have been hovering between 11 and 15 degrees Celsius at most places, six to nine notches below the normal.
According to the weather department, the cold conditions will prevail till the weekend. On Monday, Delhi recorded a high of 14.3 degrees Celsius and a low of 8.3 degrees Celsius.
Srinagar was reeling under a low of minus 3.7 degrees Celsius -- 2.2 degrees below the season's average. The famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest recorded place in the Valley with a low of minus 11.5 degrees Celsius.
Delhi recorded the coldest day of the season on Wednesday, with the minimum temperature settling at 7 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal.
According to SAFAR, high surface winds are forecasted to continue till Wednesday night. “The AQI is likely to stay at moderate to lower end of poor category till tomorrow."
Meanwhile, the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi also worsened today as the air pollution level crossed 300-mark. The AQI of the national capital was recorded at 305 early Wednesday.
Earlier on Sunday, Director at private weather forecasting agency Skymet, Mahesh Palawat, had said the national capital will face an extended winter season till March 6 due to the cold winds.
According to the MeT department, the maximum temperature was recorded at 22.3 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year.
It was a cold morning in the national capital with the mercury settling at 7.1 degrees Celsius even as a thick smog reduced visibility in the city leading to delay of several trains.
