Dense fog blanketed parts of Delhi on Wednesday as it recorded a minimum temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius in the morning, three notches below the normal temperature. The India Meteorological Department has predicted both "cold day" and "cold wave" in parts of Delhi on Thursday and Friday.
A cold wave gripped Delhi on Tuesday as icy winds blowing from the snow-covered western Himalayas brought the minimum temperature down to 4.1 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the city this season so far, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
An AQI between 0-50 is marked good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201- 300 is poor, 301-400 is very poor and 401-500 is considered severe.
Apart from Delhi, the fog was also witnessed in the National Capital Region including Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurugram and Noida. Due to low visibility and ongoing farmers' protest, traffic has slowed down across the capital.
The air quality over Delhi and National Capital Regional Area is likely to improve marginally but remain in the upper end of the "Very Poor" category according to IMD.
On Monday, Delhi recorded a minimum of 6.9 degrees Celsius. This is the eight day this month that the minimum temperature remained below 10 degrees Celsius.
For the plains, the IMD declares a cold wave when the minimum temperature is 10 degrees Celsius or below and is 4.5 notches less than normal for two consecutive days.

Extreme cold conditions have taken over the whole of North India. Reportedly, most stations in the capital have recorded severe cold conditions continuously for 12 days. Delhi had also experienced cold wave spell in four years -1997, 1998, 2003, and 2014.
The weather department has predicted severe cold conditions in Delhi over the weekend. Meanwhile, authorities in Haryana have ordered the closure of all schools in the state in view of intense coldwave. In Haryana, day temperatures have been hovering between 11 and 15 degrees Celsius at most places, six to nine notches below the normal.
According to the weather department, the cold conditions will prevail till the weekend. On Monday, Delhi recorded a high of 14.3 degrees Celsius and a low of 8.3 degrees Celsius.
