The residue burning chokes the whole of north India during the winter months (November to January) with heavy smog over the region. National capital Delhi and nearby areas are the worst affected by the smog.
The air quality index in areas like Gurugram, Dwaraka, Mundka, Wazirpur also showed considerable decline.
An Air Quality Index between 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 satisfactory, 101-200 moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor, and 401-500 severe.
The overall Air Quality Index of New Delhi was recorded at 48 which falls under the "good" category, as per the data of the Central Pollution Control Board.
An overall air quality index (AQI) of 140 was recorded at 4 pm on Wednesday which in the moderate category. On Tuesday the air quality in the national capital was in the satisfactory category.
The air quality in Delhi deteriorated beyond the "severe" level because of a ground-level dust storm in western India which increased coarser particles in the air, the Central Pollution Control Board data showed.
