The marked change in his policy towards India came as in May this year the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned the Maldives that it faces a high risk of debt distress without significant policy changes.
India had boycotted China's previous two BRI summits held in 2017 and 2019 due to its stance on the flagship economic corridor through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. India has also insisted that the BRI should be based on universally recognised international norms.
Surprisingly, debt is consuming an ever-greater amount of the tax revenue needed to keep schools open, provide electricity and pay for food and fuel.
