Kolkata rape and murder case: There is a growing demand for the death sentence for the Kolkata rape and murder convict, however, the court said that the case does not fall in the 'rarest of the rare' category. There is a split opinion over giving capital punishment in India.
"The chief justice of Nigeria should be ashamed, she is a woman and a mother," said the executive director of Enough is Enough, a civil society organisation promoting good governance in Nigeria.
Previously, courts had no choice but to mandate hanging as punishment for a range of crimes including murder, drug trafficking, treason, kidnapping and acts of terror.
