Facebook is embroiled in a widening scandal that a British data firm called Cambridge Analytica improperly gathered detailed information on its 87 million users.
The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has reportedly told the TRAI that the step had been taken to provide data about channels watched and their duration which would help advertisers.
Zuckerberg, facing a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce committees, expressed his willingness to ensure protection of integrity of elections across world.

Apart from those affected, over 2 billion Facebook users will also see a link "at the top of their news feed so they can see what apps they use and the information they have shared".
The researcher, who goes by the pseudonym Elliot Alderson, in a series of tweets, pointed the privacy lapses in the NaMO App and alleged that mobile marketing platform CleverTap was the beneficiary of the data transfer.

The war of words, started with Congress campaign #DeleteNaMoApp, heated up on Monday on both sides as Rahul Gandhi also tweeted further accusations.
"We have a responsibility to protect your information. If we can't we don't deserve it," the ad read.
The notice came after reports that political parties had used the data analytics firm during elections.
Congress communications incharge Randeep Surjewala said that it was the BJP which hired the services of the controversial firm during Bihar and Gujarat elections.
