Cyclone Yaas has crossed the Odisha border south of Balasore and will reach Jharkhand on Thursday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said today. Meanwhile, Jharkhand, which was put on high alert, continued evacuating low-lying areas on Wednesday, officials said.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday held a review meeting on impending cyclone Yass and instructed officials to remain alert to deal with the calamity.
Cyclone Yaas is nearing the country's east coast, days after deadly cyclone, Tauktae, hit its west coast.
As Cyclone Yaas approaches towards country's eastern coast, the Indian Army has deployed 17 integrated relief columns, comprising specialised personnel with necessary equipment and inflatable boats, in West Bengal.
Yaas will lead to storm surge on the coasts of Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Bhadrak in Odisha. It will also cause a storm surge of two to four metres along the coastline of East Midnapore and one to two metres in the South 24 Parganas district.
Cyclonic Yaas will make landfall near Dhamra Port in Odisha’s Bhadrak district on Wednesday morning.
Cyclone Yaas is very likely to cross north Odisha-West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island around Balasore, during noon of May 26 as a 'Very Severe Cyclonic Storm'.
"The severe cyclonic storm Yaas over east-central Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of about 9 kmph during past six hours and lay centred at 9 UTC of May 24 over east-central Bay of Bengal," IMD said in its bulletin. "It is very likely to move north-northwestwards, intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. It would continue to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach northwest Bay of Bengal near North Odisha and West Bengal coasts by May 26 early morning," the weather agency said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted that the cyclonic storm Yaas is going to intensity into a 'very severe cyclonic storm' in the next 12 hours.
Calcutta High Court on Monday informed that it has canceled the hearing of all matters listed for May 26 and 27, in view of the warning issued by IMD for Cyclone Yaas.
The Odisha Government on Monday assigned the high-risk districts to Senior Officers to supervise relief, rehabilitation and restoration work in the wake of the severe Cyclonic storm 'Yaas' which is expected to hit the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal on May 26.

18 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in Odisha. Seven teams have been deployed in Balasore, 4 in Bhadrak, 3 in Kendrapada, 2 in Jajpur, one each in Jagatsinghpur and Mayurbhanj. Four teams have been kept as reserve, as per the NDRF.
PM Modi to hold meeting with ministers, officials today to review the preparations for the approaching Cyclone Yaas.
PM Modi was informed that the Cabinet Secretary has taken a meeting of National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) on May 22, 2021, with Chief Secretaries of all the Coastal States and Union Territories (UTs) and Central Ministries/ Agencies concerned.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said relief materials were dispatched to vulnerable areas, while officials were directed for early evacuation of people from coastal and riverine areas
