"The damage assessment report would provide a way forward to the recovery of the state from the cyclone as well as develop a better preparedness strategy for the future," said the Chief Minister. He invited the international agencies, national NGOs, the private sector and the civil society to come forward and join in the recovery and reconstruction efforts to rebuild Odisha.
Cyclone Fani: Three grants totalling 7.032 million Hong Kong dollars (about $902,278) from Hong Kong's Disaster Relief Fund have been approved for cyclone Fani victims in Odisha, the Special Administrative Region (SAR) government said in Hong Kong.
Cyclone Fani had hit Odisha and adjoining coastal areas in May, which had resulted in severe loss of life and property. The cyclone had claimed the lives of nearly 77 people, while many were left homeless. Some districts of the state are still reeling under the after-effects of the cyclone as the government continues to make recovery arrangements.
As many as 64 people had died and over 1.4 lakh hectare crop area affected due to cyclone Fani in Odisha, the Home Ministry said on Tuesday.
Patnaik also sought the allocation for 5 lakh permanent houses to replace the habitations damaged in the cyclone.
"As you know, we have been hit by a recent cyclone which has done a great deal of damage. I have asked for Rs 5,000 crore for rehabilitation and restoration work." Naveen Patnaik said.
The cyclone that made landfall at a wind speed of about 200 kmph near Puri affected 14 districts involving 20,367 villages. It affected 1.6 crore people and 1.88 lakh hectare of crop areas.
At least 64 persons including 39 from Puri district alone were killed in the calamity. The official said of the total 25,01,131 affected electricity consumers, power has been restored to 23,36,584 consumers.
According to the Met office, heat wave condition is very likely to prevail at some places till Monday.
The Income Tax Department Friday extended the due date for depositing tax deducted at source (TDS) for the month of April 2019 from May 7 to May 20 for deductors in cyclone-hit Odisha.
Though the state government has spent more than Rs 6,000 crore in relief and restoration works within a fortnight of the calamity, the Centre has released Rs 1,341 crore so far.
The four suspended assistant surgeons were found absent during the visit of senior officers of the health department to cyclone-affected Puri district, said a health official.
The cyclone hit the district on May 3. Rendered homeless, Khirod Jena (58), a landless daily wage earner in Raghudeipur village, has been living in 7 feet x 6 feet toilet along with spouse and two grown-up daughters.
The power supply in Puri district has still not been restored in majority of the households ever since the cyclone wreaked havoc in the state.
Twelve days after cyclone 'Fani' hit Odisha coast, power supply at the Jagannath Temple in Puri district was restored on Wednesday evening, officials said. There had been no electricity in the temple since the time severe cyclonic storm 'Fani' made landfall in Puri, they said. Power along the Grand Road -- from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple -- was also restored.
According to the company, over 2,600 sites are now operational and connecting people in these areas.
Narrating her ordeal, Shantilata Mishra, a widow at Biraramchandrapur village in Puri district said, "I have lost my thatched house in the cyclone. No one from the government has come to see my damaged house. I am waiting for the assessment since May 4."
The inter-ministerial team is being led by Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs Vivek Bharadwaj.
An analysis of the frequencies of cyclones on the East and West coasts of India during 1891-2000 show that nearly 308 cyclones (out of which 103 were severe) affected the East Coast.
