The Sri Lankan government on Monday enforced a countrywide curfew and blocked social media platforms to stop people inciting violence as communal violence spread to new areas in the island nation in the worst unrest since Easter Sunday bombings which killed nearly 260 people.
An indefinite curfew was clamped in Assam's Hailakandi town on Friday following a communal clash which left 15 people injured, a senior district official said.
Curfew was promulgated in the town and adjoining areas on April 9 after the terror attack on senior RSS leader Chanderkant Sharma and his security guard inside a health centre, triggering violent protests.
"The situation is tense and protesters are still indulging in stone pelting. We are making efforts to restore the law and order," police said, adding more than 40 protesters have been arrested.
Curfew was imposed in Jammu city on Friday and the Army conducted flag marches in sensitive areas following massive protests and incidents of stone-pelting and arson over the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed, officials said.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by the Additional Superintendent of Police Kishtwar has been set up to probe the murders.
The hill town has been in the grip of violence since Thursday following a fight between the Sikh residents in Shillong's Punjabi Lane area, also known as sweeper colony, and the Khasi drivers of state-run buses.
