Delhi firecracker ban: Delhi government has banned the bursting of firecrackers on Diwali. In a press conference, Environment Minister Gopal Rai informed bursting of crackers can attract a jail term of up to six months and a fine of Rs 200.
BJP on cracker ban: Gopal Rai said the ban extends to online sale of firecrackers. He, however, did not clarify when the restrictions would come into force. The BJP slammed the ban saying that the contribution of cracker burning in Delhi's pollution was “minimal”
Gopal Rai said Delhi's base pollution has remained the same. Only two factors have been added - firecrackers and stubble burning.
The decision was taken after extensive consultation with health, environment experts, and other stakeholders, the order said.
