About 78 cows have died of suspected food poisoning at a government-aided cattle shelter in Rajasthan's Churu district. While these cows have died since Friday night, a few others are sick, an official of the state's Animal Husbandry Department.
Cow protection has been one of the priorities of the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh and the Chief Minister has directed that shelter homes for stray cows should be set up in all districts. However, most of the cow shelters are incomplete with only a boundary. Many of them do not even have a roof to keep the animals safe from the vagaries of weather.
Eight cows were locked inside the government-run school campus in Karonda Hathi village a few days ago by some farmers.
