India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.
Most children do not have any consequences after being infected with Omicron, claims a new study. The report further said that the Omicron coronavirus variant causes a milder post-Covid syndrome than the Delta strain.
Earlier, the DoPT had issued certain guidelines through an OM dated January 3 and the same were being reviewed from time to time depending upon the pandemic situation.
The bispecific antibodies can also neutralise earlier strains including Delta, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (a distant deadly relative of the current strain that emerged but disappeared quickly in 2003) and even some coronaviruses carried by bats, the report said.

Based on all their findings, the researchers estimated the likely rates of vaccine hesitancy according to childhood trauma and age: these ranged from around 3.5 per cent among those aged 70 and above with no experience of childhood adversity, to 38 per cent among 18-29 year olds who had experienced 4 or more types of childhood trauma.

Importantly, the research also revealed the positive effect that social support plays in protecting expecting mothers' mental health. The authors found women who considered the impact of COVID-19 to be more negative showed higher levels of anxiety. Crucially though, help from partners, family and friends, and the NHS acted as a protective factor and was associated with fewer negative symptoms.
According to the World Health Organisation, the probability of spreading within a household was 39 per cent for BA.2 versus 29 per cent for BA.1, the original Omicron strain.

People with the debilitating condition called long Covid continue to experience symptoms -- such as fatigue, shortness of breath and even trouble concentrating -- weeks, months or years after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Some estimate that up to 30 per cent of infected people, including many who were never hospitalised, have persistent symptoms.
"Altered gut microbiome composition is strongly associated with persistent symptoms in patients with Covid-19 up to 6 months after clearance of SARS-CoV-2 virus," said researchers.

Omicron survived 21.1 hours on skin model from cadavers, followed by the Wuhan virus (8.6 hours), the Gamma (11 hours) and Delta (16.8 hours) variant. The survival of Alpha (19.6 hours) and Beta (19.1 hours) was found to be similar.
A new study has shown that Omicron variant viruses are particularly sensitive to inhibition by the so-called interferon response, an unspecific immune response that is present in all body cells.
