Strap: The demand for power has gone up by almost 20 percent in energy terms. The supply of domestic coal has increased but the increase in the supply is not sufficient to meet the increased demand for power, said the Central government in official order.
Jharkhand, Haryana, Bihar, Punjab, and Maharashtra are among the states seeing power outages. Delhi has also written to the Centre over the possibility of power cuts to important establishments.
The latest figures indicate that the coal shortage situation is improving slowly.
The coal ministry on Friday said it has taken various measures, including diverting the output from captive coal mines, to augment fuel supply to the power sector.
Earlier, Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut said that four out of 27 power generation units are currently shut in the state.
Meanwhile, central government sources said that the situation will be normal within a month. There is no shortage in daily power and coal supply.
There is a 12 per cent fall in imports of foreign coal which power companies blend to cut losses. Due to high prices, they also shifted to domestic coal.
The step has been taken following the successful auction of 28 coal mines in the first two tranches and there shall be a total of 88 coal mines on offer at present.
"The Centre is fulfilling all the demands required by the states. Coal stocks have started increasing in the last four days," sources said.
The development assumes significance in the wake of the country's power plants grappling with coal shortages in the country at a time when the festival season has already begun.
As per the guidelines for allocation of power, 15 per cent power from CGS is kept as “unallocated power” which is allocated by the central government to needy states.
Sharing a detailed account mentioning specifics regarding the requirement of power in Delhi, the Central government said "as per the information received from Delhi DISCOMs, there was no outage on account of power shortage."

The power availability is likely to improve within the next one or two days as the additional quantum of about 400 MW is expected to be received from the state sector and other outside long-term sources.
Addressing the event on Monday, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy RK Singh said, "India is already ahead of what we pledged in our Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)."
A high-level meeting over coal crisis is underway in Delhi. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Power minister, other officials from coal ministry are present in the meeting.
Delhi Power Minister Satyendar Jain said that the NTPC has capped production capacity of its plants to 55 per cent.
Coal shortage: The daily average coal requirement at the power plants is about 18.5 lakh tonnes per day whereas the daily coal supply has been around 17.5 lakh tonnes.
As many as 13 thermal power generation plants supplying power to the state power distribution company MahaVitaran have been shut down, due to shortage of coal.
