Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has written three letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court. The CJI also sought in the raise of the retirement age of high court judges to 65 years.
The Judges of the In-House Inquiry Committee of the apex court, which gave clean chit to Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on the allegations of sexual harassment against him, has done grave "injustice to the complainant, the CJI and the Supreme Court as an institution," former Union Minister Arun Shourie said on Wednesday.

He asserted that beliefs must be constantly evaluated on the touchstone of constitutional morality, which must prevail when there arises any doubt or conflict, and said this is true patriotism to the Constitution.
A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said "We are of the view that it is not the stage to interfere (with the appointment)."
Addressing the Dr Patangrao Kadam memorial lecture here Saturday, the CJI said that if an individual has the right to live he also has the right to die with dignity.
His name has been recommended for the post by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra to the government.
If the recommendation is cleared by the Central government, Justice Gogoi will be administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind on October 3.

Justice (retired) Thakur was referring to the presser by four senior judges -- Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph -- who had virtually raised revolt against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra by levelling a litany of allegations against him.
On May 9, Justice J Chelameswar, the senior-most judge of the apex court, had written a letter to the CJI urging him to convene the Collegium meet to urgently forward Justice Joseph’s name to the Centre.
The top court by its February 16 judgment had asked the Centre to frame a scheme for the implementation of the tribunal award and its judgment. It had given the Centre six weeks time, that came to end on March 30, for this purpose.
In his Facebook post, Jaitley termed the impeachment motion as “wholly misconcieved”, adding that “it was poorly drafted and lacked in substance”.
The plea also referred to various media reports carrying the statements of MPs and politicians in this regard and said no law was made by Parliament which permits the circulation of a draft notice of motion to the media.
Naidu’s decision met with strong criticism from the Opposition, with the former Law Minister Kapil Sibal terming it as illegal and unconstitutional done in a "tearing hurry".
