On the Sensex, stocks of NTPC, PowerGrid, Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, and Tata Motors witnessed significant gains, while Airtel, ICICI Bank, Maruti, and Asian Paints ended in the red.
ICICI Bank, Tech Mahindra, ITC, HCL Technologies, Tata Steel, Axis Bank, Reliance Industries, IndusInd Bank, and HDFC Bank were the major gainers in early trade.
The 30-share index slumped 1,028.61 points or 1.80 per cent to 55,983.13 in the opening trade. Similarly, the Nifty tanked 307.50 points or 1.81 per cent to 16,677.70.
On the Sensex chart, HDFC duo fell as much as 2.48 per cent, followed by Bajaj FinServ, Kotak Bank and Bajaj Finance – dropping up to 2.23 per cent.
After touching a lifetime high of 44,825.37 in the opening session, the 30-share BSE index was trading 242.76 points or 0.55 per cent higher at 44,765.78.
Market benchmark Sensex dropped over 200 points on Tuesday led by losses in index-heavyweights HDFC twins, Kotak Bank and ITC amid weak global cues. After hitting an intra-day low of 41,301.63, the 30-share BSE index pared losses to trade 86.90 points or 0.21 per cent lower at 41,442.01.
Benchmark stock gauges Sensex and Nifty ended on a flat note on Tuesday as investors scrambled to book profits after a stellar two-day rally. After gyrating 393 points during the day, the 30-share index ended 7.11 points or 0.02 per cent higher, at 39,097.14.
Equity benchmark BSE Sensex jumped over 200 points in early session on Tuesday, driven by gains in index heavyweights RIL, Infosys, TCS and Maruti, amid positive domestic and global cues. Strong foreign fund inflow too buoyed market mood here, traders said.
The 30-share BSE index slipped 97.03 points in see-saw trade to close at 36,227.14, while the NSE Nifty dropped 47.10 points to 10,930.45. The Sensex has lost a whopping 2,417.93 points, or 6.26 per cent.
