Teenager Akash Khillare from Maharashtra's Aurangabad was dissuaded from learning swimming by his grandfather but he picked up the skill on the sly, and that helped him save a mother and her toddler from drowning, a feat for which he will be getting a bravery award at the hands of PM Modi on Republic Day.
Palaniswami awarded the couple -- P. Shanmugavelu and his wife Senthamarai -- with Rs 2 lakh in cash and gold medals for their exemplary act of bravery in chasing away two robbers who had attacked them with machetes at their home.
"Dar successfully saved five tourists, including two foreigners, in the true spirit of trademark Kashmiri hospitality," the officials said.
