According to officials, the ferry, carrying 85 people, including five crew members, was en route to Elephanta Island when the incident occurred near Uran in Mumbai. The speedboat apparently lost control and rammed into the ferry.
The incident occurred around 4 pm on Wednesday. Following the incident, a rescue operation has been launched to save passengers.
The boat with nearly 200 people on board was on its way to a weekly market in Niger state when the boat capsized. No survivors were found even after 12 hours of search and rescue operations while at least 27 died in the accident.
It has not been confirmed how many people were on the boat, although witnesses said over 100 people were present. Congo has witnessed several fatal boat accidents primarily due to overcrowding and non-compliance with maritime regulations.
The rescue services stated that initiated the rescue process soon after getting an alert. Out of a total of 84 people, 27 have been rescued so far while nine have died. The remaining 48 were still missing.
