With a caste survey report released in Bihar, calls for a similar exercise by Opposition parties have gained momentum in Uttar Pradesh. The political parties including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party and Apna Dal have pressed for the caste-based survey in the state.
Rahul Gandhi had said that 'jitni abadi utna haq' is the pledge of the Congress party. Abhishek Singhvi said that the idea could culminate in "majoritarianism".
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said he hoped the Bihar survey would provide an impetus for the nationwide caste census. Soon after the Bihar government released the findings of the survey, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and others batted for a similar survey in the entire country.
The issue of the caste survey conducted by the Bihar government will be heard by the Supreme Court on October 6. Meanwhile, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar called an all-party meeting of the caste census report that had been released on October 2.
