The Centre has warned its employees of "consequences" if they go on strike called on January 8 by one of their associations to protest against union government's policies including labour reforms, FDI and privatisation
Services at several bank branches and ATMs are likely to be hit on January 8 (Wednesday) as Central traders unions and bank unions have called a nationwide strike. The bank strike call is part of a Bharat Bandh call given by ten central trade unions. SBI Bank, Bank of Baroda, other banks functioning may be affected or even paralyzed.
Bharat Bandh: A number of entrance examinations scheduled for January 8 are likely to be affected as 10 Central Trade Unions have called for Bharat Bandh on Wednesday. Bharat Bandh is likely to affect JEE Main 2020, UPTET 2019 and ICAR NET 2020 Entrance Exam. Schools in some states are also likely to declare holiday on in wake of the strike.
Bharat Bandh has been declared on January 8 by the central trade unions to protest against the 'anti-labour policies' of the government. "The Central Trade Unions conveyed their firm resolve after the meeting called upon by Union Labour Minister. The General Strike on January 8, 2020, stands," 10 central trade unions in a joint statement.
Central trade unions have called for a nation-wide bank strike on January 8, due to which banking sectors are set to be affected. At some places, ATM services are also set to be hit as bank unions have ordered their employees against working. The Bharat Bandh 2020 has been called against Central government's recent banking reforms and policies.
According to the reports, public transport and banking services remain disrupted for the second day in some states.
Normal life was largely unaffected in most parts of the country barring Left-ruled Kerala where the stir turned into a 'hartal' with schools and colleges being shut and banking services being affected.
Agitators blocked the railway tracks and raised slogans. Buses and auto-rickshaws were kept off roads during the strike.
The Reserve Bank of India employees, however, have supported the strike only on January 8.
"I do not want to spend a single word on this. In West Bengal, we have taken a stand of not supporting any bandh," said West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee
Addressing a press conference in Lucknow, Mayawati accused the BJP government of playing in to the hands of big industrialists.
In states like Kerala, Karnataka, Bihar, Odisha and Arunachal Pradesh life was hit by the shutdown, but Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Mizoram remained largely unaffected.
Lok Sabha elections 2019: "They are not concerned about these issues. They are silent on fuel prices, on the atmosphere of fear, hatred and violence in the country. They are thinking about the opposition in the national executive," he added.
Led by Rahul Gandhi, a united Opposition, on Monday staged a foot march here in support of Bharat Bandh called by Congress party against rising fuel prices.

Bharat Bandh: Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar accused the NDA regime of betraying the people through fuel price hikes and said that a beginning had been made to oust the "anti-people" Modi government in the Lok Sabha elections 2019.
Normal life was hit in some states with offices and educational institutes closed and vehicles off the roads during an opposition sponsored 'Bharat Bandh' which was largely peaceful, barring some incidents of violence.
