Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid was arrested in 2016 in a terror funding case. He was held under the UAPA law. Since then he has been incarcerated in Tihar jail. After becoming MP from Baramulla, he applied for interim bail to take oath in the parliament.
Engineer Rashid defeated National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah by a margin of 2,04,142 votes. While Rashid garnered 4,72,481 votes, Abdullah was polled 2,68,339 votes.
Baramulla Election Results 2024: In the last few Lok Sabha electoins, people in the Baramulla showed their supports for multiple parties - JKNC, JKPDP, Congress and JKPC. However, Omar Abdullah's JKNC's won the seat in 2019 and Mehbooba Mufit's JKPDP in 2014.
Baramulla created history as the voter turnout was more than 58 per cent, registering its highest polling percentage in almost four decades. PM Narendra Modi lauded the people of the Lok Sabha constituency on the occasion and hailed their commitment to democratic values.
Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency went to polls in the fifth phase of elections on Monday (May 20). The fifth phase marked the end of Lok Sabha elections in the Union Territory which has five constituencies. The results will be declared on June 4.
The ongoing Lok Sabha elections are first to be conducted after the abrogation of Article 370. In last phase, Srinagar also witnessed record-breaking polling, marking the highest since 1996.
