Avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, is an infectious viral disease of birds (especially wild water fowl such as ducks and geese).
Notably, the virus was first traced in North American waterfowl in 2002. It is known to infect horses, dogs and seals.
WHO said that bird flu is a zoonotic virus, so at present, the risk of its spread is high in animals. However, one needs to take it seriously as the early strains of coronavirus were also zoonotic and we all saw how it turned into a pandemic.
Divisional Forest Officer, Supaul, Sunil Kumar Sharan said that more than four dozen birds, including crows, ducks, chickens, and other birds were found dead in mysterious circumstances in Chapkahi village under Sadar police station on Mar 31.

The results come three days after samples taken from crows and ducks in the national capital tested positive for avian influenza. This had led to the Delhi government on Monday banning the sale of processed and packaged chicken brought from outside the city.
Avian Influenza has been reported in at least ten states of the country so far. Delhi, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand were the latest to confirm bird flu amid strenuous efforts to contain the spread. Other states that have reported bird flu are Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

As many as 1,200 birds were found dead across India on Saturday, including 900 in a poultry farm in Maharashtra, with the Centre saying that the outbreak of avian influenza has been reported in Uttar Pradesh, taking the total number of affected states to seven. These include Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh.
Over 1.60 lakh birds of five poultry farms in Haryana’s Panchkula district are set to be culled as some poultry samples there have tested positive for the avian flu.
