The top court rapped Ministry of Home Affairs for its plea seeking to stall the NRC work for two weeks keeping in mind the role of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the election duty.
The top court also said that the upcoming general election and exercise of NRC should not be affected, and asked the competent authorities to sit together to plan them.
Introducing the bill, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the bill will pave the way for Indian citizenship to the “persecuted religious minorities”---the Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis---from the three countries.
The process of filing claims and objections to the draft NRC commenced on September 25 following a directive from the Supreme Court. The process will come to an end on December 15.
Mamata questioned if the killings were related to recent developments linked to NRC in Assam.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also allowed claimants for Assam NRC to rely on five documents which were earlier objected to by NRC coordinator.
There is no need to re-submit the documents submitted earlier but if additional documents are required to be submitted, then any one or more of the 10 documents listed by the Supreme Court, under whose supervision the NRC is being updated, must be submitted.
The bench made clear that the second opportunity has been granted to the citizens keeping in mind the "magnitude" of the issue.
Slamming those who have said that India will have to face international criticism if illegal immigrants are deported, the BJP leader said even Bangladesh has been in active talks with Myanmar to deport lakhs of Rohingya people, who have taken shelter there to escape persecution in Myanmar.
The top court had termed the issue as "human problem with great magnitude" and had asked the state NRC coordinator to submit a report in a sealed cover on the ramification of allowing the claimants to file new sets of legacy documents.
Sonowal, 55, was responding to a question on Banerjee's comment that the NRC exercise in Assam was done with a "political motive" to divide people and it would lead to "bloodbath" and a "civil war" in the country.
A total of five FIRs have been registered against Banerjee in Assam since the publication of the NRC final draft on July 30.
