The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the deadline for publication of final National Register of Citizens(NRC) for Assam from July 31 to August 31. The bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice R F Nariman, however, declined the plea of the Centre and Assam government to conduct sample re-verification.

The process of filing claims and objections to the draft NRC commenced on September 25 following a directive from the Supreme Court. The process will come to an end on December 15.
The top court raised doubts over the Centre's proposal to allow a claimant to change his legacy document for inclusion in the draft.
Reiterating that the names of many Indians were "deliberately" left out of the draft NRC in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Assam, Banerjee said every step taken by these outfits are influenced by "political vendetta".
Calling for the elimination of infiltrators in Kashmir, the Shiv Sena said that abolition of Article 370 of the Constitution, which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was as much a nationalistic work as implementing the NRC list.
“Mamata Banerjee is not aware of the ground reality in Assam,” the outgoing state TMC president said.
The Registrar General further alleged that he had deputed his own staff to help the West Bengal government in collecting the documents sought by the NRC authorities, but the efforts were not fruitful.
Accusing the Congress of compromising with the sovereignty of India, Jaitley said that leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee should understand that India's sovereignty is not a plaything.
Mamata Banerjee has been leading the Opposition's charge against the Centre over the Assam NRC draft controversy and has accused the BJP government of trying to divide the country on religious lines.

Asking the Centre to frame standard operating procedure (SOP) to deal with claims and objections regarding the NRC, the apex court said that the SOP should be placed before it by August 16 for approval.
