The number of MLAs from the Muslim community has varied over the years in Uttar Pradesh. The state had 23 MLAs from the Muslim community in 2017, 64 MLAs in 2012, 56 MLAs in 2007, 64 MLAs in 2002. In the 2017 assembly elections, BJP got 39.7 per cent votes, BSP got 22.2 per cent, Samajwadi Party 21.8 per cent and Congress got 6.2 per cent votes.
Owaisi's comments came amid a controversy over Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party chief OP Rajbhar's statement that had Mohammed Ali Jinnah been made the first Prime Minister of India, there would not have been partition.
The Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad also alleged that the government is weakening the country internally.
Reacting sharply, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that it was a case of "plain hatred towards Muslims".
AIMIM will contest all elections in Maharashtra from Aurangabad on and the option of entering into alliances is also open, party president Asaduddin Owaisi said on Saturday.

The decision of Asaduddin Owaisi''s AIMIM to contest the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls on the main issue of giving leadership to Muslims has created unease among parties that consider them as their core vote bank.
