The Supreme Court Thursday refused to pass any interim order on a batch of pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the Centre's decision to abrogate the provisions of Article 370, which gave special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Centre has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, justifying the revocation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir by saying that the power under Article 370(1)(d) of the Constitution could validly be exercised even after the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly of the erstwhile state.
The revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status granted under Article 370 has ensured a safe future for the children of the region, Union minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday.

All central laws — such as the anti-corruption act and provisions of the IPC — will be applicable in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh from Thursday, according to a notification issued by the Union Home Ministry. Some of these laws were until now not applicable to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, because of its special status under Article 370 and Article 35.
According to the petitioner, Desiya Makkal Sakthi Katchi (DMSK), a Tamil Nadu-based group, the Union legislature cannot legislate on those matters in the Union List and the Concurrent List which are not in accordance with subjects in the Instrument of Accession of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Centre has declared omission of "permanent residents or hereditary state subjects" in two newly created Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh — which came into existence on Thursday, ending their seven-decades-long privileges over land and jobs.
The union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, have been carved out of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, in accordance with the government's August 5 decision to revoke the special status of the state under Article 370 and bifurcate it into two UTs.
China has objected to the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories as "unlawful and void", saying India's decision to "include" some of China's territory into its administrative jurisdiction "challenged" Beijing's sovereignty on Thursday.
"Today, on National Integration Day, I am reminding every citizen of this challenge that is present in front of the country. Those who cannot win in war with us, they are challenging the unity of ours," Modi said in an apparent reference to Pakistan.
The swearing-in ceremony will be first held in Leh where Mathur would be administered the oath of office followed by that of Murmu in Srinagar.
