The enactment of anti-conversion laws in various states reflects a broader trend of legislative action addressing religious conversions, a subject that has long been a contentious issue in India’s socio-political landscape.
The apex court had earlier said that forcible religious conversions, if true, were a "serious issue" which could affect the security of the nation, and had sought the response of the Centre.
Karnataka anti-conversion law: Home Minister Araga Jnanendra piloted the Bill for consideration in the Upper House on Thursday. Noting that in recent times religious conversions have become widespread, he said there have been mass conversions with allurements and through force.

Congress partly vehemently opposed the bill, calling it "anti-people", "inhuman", "anti-constitutional", "anti-poor" and "draconian", and urged that it should not be passed for any reason and should be withdrawn by the government.
