Akhilesh Yadav in his recent tweet slammed BJP for the shifting of Amar Jawan Jyoti from India Gate, which was merged into the Amar Jawan Jyoti at National War Memorial in Delhi.
The Amar Jawan Jyoti was constructed as a memorial for Indian soldiers who were killed in action in the 1971 Indo-Pak war, which India won, leading to the creation of Bangladesh.
The existence of Amar Jawan Jyoti was questioned two years ago after the National War Memorial came into being and the nation got a new eternal flame there. Back then, the Indian Army had stated that Amar Jawan Jyoti will continue as it is an "inseparable" part of the country's history.
The government's clarification came amid sharp criticism from the Opposition leaders over reports that the flame at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, which has been burning for 50 years, will be extinguished.
An eternal flame burns at the Amar Jawan Jyoti to commemorate the indomitable courage of soldiers who died in the service of the nation. It is symbolised by a reversed rifle standing on its barrel and crested by a soldier's helmet.
