Changing the name of Allahabad, which has been used for hundreds of years, to Prayagraj is neither in interest of the public nor the government, said the PIL.
The proposal to rename the historic city of Allahabad as Prayagraj was approved by the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Tuesday.
Calling it an effort towards restoring an old name for the city, a state BJP spokesperson said the party has rectified the mistake made by Akbar.

The move to rename Allahabad comes after the state government renamed the Mughalsarai station as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhayaya Junction earlier this year.
