The government earlier this month handed over ownership rights in national carrier Air India to Tata Group for Rs 18,000 crore. The amount includes the takeover of the debt burden of Rs 15,300 crore and another Rs 2,700 crore in cash.
Air India is also planning on changing the meal services that are offered to the onboard passengers. The airline also said that it is enhancing its meal plans to 'full' for some sectors starting Thursday, the day of the handover. The changes, it said, will be made across most sectors over time in a phased manner.
After a competitive bidding process, the government had on October 8 last year sold Air India to Talace Private Limited, a subsidiary of the Tata Group's holding company, for Rs 18,000 crore.
Tata Group, which won the bid to acquire the national carrier along with Air India Express and 50 per cent stake in AISATS in October last year, is expected to formally takeover the airline on Thursday.
Maharaja is the official mascot of Air India which operates globally apart from domestic operations. According to the available data in 2020, "Air India operates around 101 destinations including 57 domestic operations including 33 countries on four continents around the world."

Air India had earlier said, "Due to deployment of the 5G communications in the USA, we will not be able to operate the following flights of January 19, 2022."
Meanwhile, DGCA chief Arun Kumar told news agency PTI that the Indian aviation regulator was working "in close coordination with our carriers to overcome the situation" that has arisen due to 5G internet's deployment in the US.
The wireless industry trade group CTIA notes that about 40 countries have deployed the C-Band strand of 5G without reports of harmful interference with aviation equipment.

As of August 31, Air India had a total debt of Rs 61,562 crore and 75 per cent of this debt or Rs 46,262 crore will be transferred to a special purpose vehicle AIAHL before handing over the loss-making airline to the Tata Group.

Tata group has emerged as the winning bidder for Air India, and on October 11, a letter of intent (LoI) was issued to the group.
The airline's order stated that "procurement of new aircraft parts" and "procurement of non-aircraft parts" -- which are of more than Rs 10 lakh cost -- must be done after the approval of "Director Finance or Executive Director Finance".
