The number of political parties contesting Lok Sabha elections has surged by 104% from 2009 to 2024, according to an analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). In 2024, 751 political parties are participating, compared to 677 in 2019, 464 in 2014, and 368 in 2009.
During the hearing, the bench said it would be difficult for the poll panel to mobilise manpower for uploading the voter turnout data on its website. The apex court took into cognisance the EC argument that giving 17C on website could lead to mischief and create mistrust among voters.
The ECI highlighted the risk of morphed images and misinformation if Form 17C is uploaded online. It emphasised that in tightly contested elections, publishing this data could cause confusion about the total votes polled, as it would combine in-person and postal votes.
