Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with AASU leaders to discuss the implementation of recommendations from the Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sarma Committee regarding Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, emphasising local engagement and a roadmap for execution.
Addressing a press conference, AASU leadership said the organisation is keeping a "close watch" on the forthcoming T20 match between India and Sri Lanka on January 5 in Guwahati and the 'Khelo India' games scheduled from January 10 to 22, 2020.
Asserting that people of Assam have shown solidarity with the movement against the amended citizenship law in an "unprecedented" way, AASU's chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya on Friday said unified voice of the masses will eventually prevail. The All Assam Students' Union (AASU), which led the historic Assam Movement from 1979-85, is also spearheading the anti-CAA movement which seeks revoking of the new legislation, saying it "violates" the Assam Accord.
Announcing the fresh agitation programme, AASU Chief Adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya coined the slogan "Repeal Citizenship Amendment Act or arrest me".
He also hit out at Asom Gana Parishad, BJP's alliance partner in th state, for "stabbing the people of Assam in the back" as its sole MP in Rajya Sabha Birendra Prasad Baishya had voted in favour of the bill.
