After introducing a host of features in the last few months, WhatsApp is now rolling out various design changes for its mobile app interface on both Android and iOS platforms. Some of these changes are quite subtle, while others are more noticeable. In addition to this, they have added chat filters to aid navigation and enhance the functionality of the app. Furthermore, the new changes have made the iOS and Android layouts of the app more similar than they were previously.

“When designing, we consider varying levels of connectivity and digital literacy to keep WhatsApp accessible, and we’re careful with changes that affect people’s muscle memory. This helps us be more intentional about the problems we solve for and minimize product disruption,” the company wrote in a blog post.

The company announced in a blog post that they chose the new and consistent green colour palette for the WhatsApp interface after considering over 35 different options. The latest update for WhatsApp on Android comes with a darker dark mode. This mode uses higher contrast and deeper tones which reduce eye strain and increase legibility in low-light conditions.

The WhatsApp icons have been updated with a rounded, outlined look, and there are new animations and redesigned illustrations to match them. The default doodle background has also been refreshed, albeit subtly.

The design overhaul also includes the bottom navigation bar for Android users, which was released in March this year. Meanwhile, iOS users can enjoy a new attachment layout with an expandable tray instead of a full-screen menu. The redesign also includes the recently introduced chat filters with separate tabs for unread messages and groups.
