Truecaller, a communications platform known to track the caller and update the smartphone user, has recently launched the world's first AI Call Scanner, which is considered a breakthrough in AI voice scam detection technology. This innovative feature has been designed to combat the growing threat of AI-generated voice scams by differentiating between voices- human and AI-synthesized. The AI Call Scanner will be available initially for the Truecaller Premium users on Android (US specifically), and later, the company will be expanding it to India along with other key markets.
Growing AI voice scams
AI voice synthesis technology has grown rapidly, which enables scammers to clone a person's voice with just a three-second sample. This technology poses a significant risk to smartphone users as the synthesized voices used by scammers may manipulate and deceive individuals by mimicking the voices of loved ones (distressed). The proliferation of such technology has further led to an urgent need for effective countermeasures.
AI Call Scanner: Details
Truecaller’s AI Call Scanner has been designed to address the emerging threat by providing a solution for detecting AI-generated voices. The feature has been integrated into the Truecaller Android app and initially, it will be used only for the Premium subscription.
AI Call Scanner will enable the users to easily and quickly verify the authenticity of a caller’s voice. If a suspicious call is received by the phone user, then they could tap a dedicated button within the platform’s interface to record the caller’s voice.
The recorded sample will then be processed by an advanced AI model which has been trained to identify the distinct characteristics of human speech and differentiate them from AI-generated voices.
How will the new feature work?
The process is said to be swift and accurate- it will take only a few seconds to analyze the voice sample. Truecaller’s AI Call Scanner will further leverage extensively for training data, to achieve a high degree of accuracy in detecting AI-synthesized voices.
This capability will further empower users to protect themselves from potential scams and fraudulent activities with minimal effort.
Future developments
While the AI Call Scanner launching on Android users in the US, Truecaller Premium is already exploring multiple ways to improve and expand its reach.
The team has been actively researching multiple ways to refine the AI model's accuracy, by reducing response times and adapting to emerging trends in voice synthesis technology.
