Truecaller, a caller ID and instant messaging platform has launched a special service to help people deal with cyber fraud. The service, available for both Android and iOS devices, provides fraud insurance in partnership with HDFC Ergo, currently only for Indian users.
Online fraud insurance
The fraud insurance service aims to protect users from online scams and fraud by providing a total sum insurance of Rs 10,000. It is exclusively available to premium users on an annual basis. Users without a premium subscription can upgrade their plan to access the service. Additionally, Truecaller Family subscribers can extend the plan to all their members.
Here are the steps to activate your insurance on Truecaller:
- Open the Truecaller app and make sure you have the latest version installed.
- Find the insurance option within the app's settings or premium features section.
- Follow the prompts to opt-in and activate your coverage.
AI call scanner
In addition to the fraud insurance service, Truecaller has rolled out an AI call scanner feature to combat AI-based voice scams. This feature is also only available to premium users and can be activated by setting Truecaller as the default calling app on the smartphone. When a call comes in, users can tap on the prompt to start AI Detection, which will then analyse the call to determine if an AI voice has been used in the incoming call.
Meanwhile, the government has announced that new regulations aimed at preventing fraudulent SIM swaps or replacements by cybercriminals will go into effect next Monday. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth Amendment) Regulations in March 2024, and these regulations will become enforceable on July 1. Under the new regulation, the waiting period for porting mobile numbers after a SIM swap has been reduced from 10 to 7 days.
New regulation has been added to reject requests for a Unique Porting Code (UPC). If a request for UPC is made within seven days of a SIM swap/replacement, it will be denied. This rule is to prevent fraudulent SIM-swapping practices that have caused financial harm to users recently.
