Apple's Face ID technology has been considered one of the most secure authentication systems- which is embedded within the prominent notch along with Dynamic Island of its devices. Now, Samsung is also working on introducing a groundbreaking alternative by the name of PolarID, which comes with enhanced security and a more seamless design for the devices.
PolarID: A revolution in facial recognition
Samsung's upcoming PolarID technology will aim at addressing the screen space issue inherent in Apple’s Face ID. The new face ID feature is expected to launch with the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra in 2025. The PolarID will utilize a minimal punch-hole design on the device, which will significantly reduce the space required for facial recognition sensors.
This information surfaced from Haizaki Ryouhei, a tipster on platform X (formerly known as Twitter), who suggested that PolarID will come with an advanced pre-market stage. Unlike Apple’s face recognition system, PolarID on Samsung devices will be integrated seamlessly into the display without adding any bulky sensors, promising a sleek and more efficient design.
Advanced technology
PolarID is set to bring more security and it is more effective than other existing facial recognition technologies available. Samsung has planned to harness the computational prowess of Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors in conjunction with its own LSI manufacturing capabilities.
Central to this system will be the Samsung ISOCELL Vizion 931 sensor, which is in the testing stage at present and it is said that it will feature prominently in the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
Timeline and compatibility for the launch of PolarID
Galaxy S25 Ultra or S26 Ultra
Ryouhei suggested that the new PolarID will be seen in the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra. Another tipster, Sawyer Galox, said that the technology might debut in the Galaxy S26 Ultra ( which is expected to launch in 2026).
According to Galox, Samsung is working on refining PolarID to ensure it surpasses Apple’s Face ID in both functionality and integration.
The introduction of PolarID could be a significant move for the Samsung device on the security front- bringing competitive dynamics between Samsung and Apple. Apple is further rumoured to be working on a major redesign for its upcoming iPhones, which are said to have the potential to feature under-screen or punch-hole sensors to achieve a true all-screen device.
