OpenAI's GPT-4o vs Google's Project Astra: What's different?

OpenAI introduced its new GPT4-o on May 13, a day before Google I/O 2024. The model can work with text, audio, and video prompts and answers in real time. Google also introduced a similar product named Project Astra but there is a significant difference between both products.

OpenAI, which came into the limelight after the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, has now introduced a multimodal AI tool GPT-4o. The new chatbot allows users to interact with their device, tablet, or PC like humans. This new multimodal language is capable of carrying out conversations through text, audio, and video in real-time.

What is ChatGPT-4O?

OpenAI CTO Mira Muratti released a demo video of GPT-4o, showing how it works. The company's CEO Sam Altman mentioned it on his social media handle, stating that GPT-4o features are too long for tweets, so he has posted a blog about it.

In simple terms, GPT-4o is a powerful tool for internet users, allowing them to ask questions in real-time. Prompts in this model are not limited to text like ChatGPT. This advanced multimodal AI tool lets users ask questions through text as well as video, and it can quickly answer their questions in real-time.

OpenAI named it GPT-4o, with "O" standing for "Omni," indicating its ability to understand all types of interactions. This tool from OpenAI is free for all users.

How does GPT-4o work?

OpenAI announced the tool in a demo video that shows GPT-4o sharing information about nearby objects once users allow it access to the camera. It was also seen in the demo that GPT-4o automatically composed a song for its surrounding area.

Google’s Project Astra

After the launch of ChatGPT, leading tech companies started presenting their AI models. Similarly, after the introduction of this new AI tool from OpenAI, Google introduced its multimodal AI tool, Project Astra, on May 14, 2024. In addition to this, the advanced version of GeminiAI has also been launched. Google's Project Astra works similarly to GPT-4o.

How is Project Astra different from GPT-4o?

Google has released a demo video of Project Astra. The video shows that after gaining access to the camera, Project Astra can display information about the items in the room on the screen. In addition to this, the tool can remember items it has seen nearby and provide accurate answers to related questions. However, its memory lasts for a session and that too for a short window but engineers at Google say that this can theoretically be expanded.

Users are viewing ChatGPT-4o as an advanced AI search engine, superior to Google Search. However, Google has not confirmed whether Project Astra will be integrated into Google Search.
