iOS 18 will give users more control over 'Address Book' access: Here's how

Apple recently held its World Wide Developer Conference 2024. During the event, the tech giant previewed its upcoming operating system for iPhone, iOS 18. The iPhone OS is getting a new feature that will enable iPhone users to choose which contact they want to share with their social media apps.

Social media apps often ask users’ permission to access their contacts to help them connect with their friends or make suggestions for who to follow. However, with iOS 18, Apple is restricting social apps from accessing the complete contact list of its users.

In iOS 18, a new two-step permissions pop-up screen will be introduced. First, it will ask users to allow or deny access to their contacts. If access is allowed, users will then be able to choose which contacts they want to share, instead of sharing all contacts at once.

Up until now, users had to give full access to their address books in order to try out new social experiences. However, in iOS 18, users who choose to share their address book will now have the option to decide whether they want to share all their contacts with an app. They can either select "Allow Full Access" or choose the new option "Select Contacts" if they prefer to limit access.

iOS 18 is introducing several exciting new features. You will now have the ability to customize your home screen with new theming options for app icons, allowing you to place them anywhere and automatically tint icons with dark mode.

The Control Center has been redesigned with a multi-page layout, and a new "Controls Gallery" will enable third-party developers to offer widgets for the Control Center. Additionally, you can swap new controls onto the lock screen, replacing the flashlight and camera icons.

iOS 18 also supports locking individual apps behind Face ID. In the Messages app, Tapbacks have been redesigned to allow tapping back with any emoji or sticker. You will also be able to schedule message sends and use text effects and formatting options like underline and strike-through.
