Google held its I/O 2024 developer conference on May 14. The keynote of the conference mainly focused on Gemini AI and the company has gone full force in integrating AI in its products. During the keynote speech, Google CEO Sundar Pichai introduced a new Gemini AI-powered feature in Google Photos. The newly introduced feature is called ‘Ask Photos’. The feature will make it easier for Google Photos users to look for a specific photo or recall information available in the users’ gallery.
“Now we're giving Google Photos a major upgrade with Gemini, our most capable AI model,” Google wrote in a blog post.
Google Photos users can search for a specific photo by using a combination of keywords but that leads to scrolling through pages of photos and videos. The new 'Ask Photos' feature will allow users to view photos by asking in natural language what they are looking for and Google Photos will show them what they need. For instance, if a user is looking for the best photo from each national park he has visited, he can ask ‘Ask Photos’, "Show me the best photo from each national park I’ve visited.”
In addition to this, ‘Ask Photos’ can also give users answers when they ask questions about their life, for instance, where they camped last year or when their vouchers expire. For this, Google Photos uses Gemini AI capabilities to understand the context and subject of photos to pull out details.
Furthermore, Google Photos will also help users to curate the best photos at the end of a long trip. This will help users create a trip highlight easily. It can also write a personalised caption to share on social media.
The ‘Ask Photos’ is currently an experimental feature and will start rolling out soon and the company has promised to add more capabilities to the feature in the future.
