OpenAI is reportedly working on a new feature for its ChatGPT chatbot. The under-development search feature in the chatbot can search the web for answers to users’ queries and can show results along with citations to their sources. The search feature can make the chatbot a good alternative to Google Search. The new feature will search various sources such as Wikipedia or blog posts and link to their original pages when users ask it questions.
According to Bloomberg, ChatGPT’s experimental search function can display images relevant to its written responses. For instance, if the chatbot finds diagrams or illustrated instructions helpful in answering a query such as "how to clean a split-type AC" or "how to change a doorknob," it can include them in its responses. Although ChatGPT can currently perform searches for paying customers, it may provide inaccurate responses or incorrect citations.
Although the company has not confirmed this, it is likely working on AI-powered search to remain competitive against its strongest competitors. Recently, Google has been testing AI-powered search results and showing them to users who did not opt in.
Meanwhile, OpenAI has recently expanded the capabilities of its chatbot by introducing a new Memory feature. This feature helps the bot retain instructions and preferences across all conversations, enabling a more personalised interaction experience. The Memory feature was initially rolled out to a limited number of testers in February 2024, but now it is available to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers, except for those in Europe and Korea.
ChatGPT Plus subscribers can prompt the bot to remember specific instructions or details, ensuring continuity in conversations even across different chats. This feature aims to streamline communication by eliminating the need to repeat instructions in subsequent interactions. With the Memory feature, ChatGPT can recall previous conversations and maintain a more natural flow of dialogue.
