As Apple gears up to release the latest iOS 18 this year (around September, with the new lineup launch), the company has unleashed the new iOS 17.4 for existing users. Apple released the new update on March 5, (iOS 17.4) which was released with major enhancements along with new features, majorly focusing and the users which are based in the European Union (EU).

Major iOS 17.4 features
Downloading alternative App Stores in the EU
iOS 17.4 is more inclined on the EU users who could download the alternative app stores and apps which are out of the Apple App Store. This change will help in aligning with the EU's Digital Markets Act which will provide more freedom to the users.
In-app payment options
iOS 17.4 will come with in-app payments with the new Contactless and NFC settings. This feature will prepare the device for future apps which will utilize features like NFC payments, which are focused on the EU market.
Over 100 new emoji
Apple has added more than 100 new emojis in the iOS 17.4 update, which further includes expressive faces, a slice of lime and a phoenix- to name a few. These emojis could enhance the messaging experience and would further align the latest Unicode updates.
Enhanced iMessage security
iOS 17.4 comes with iMessage security with further protection from the potential cyberattacks that involve quantum computing. Apple aims to stay ahead of emerging security challenges with the update.
Podcast transcripts
iOS 17.4 will come with new transcript capabilities for podcast lovers. In this feature, you can view and search transcripts by tapping the speech bubble icon available on the Podcasts app.
Virtual card numbers for Apple cash
Apple Cash users could generate virtual card numbers, by making it easier and safer to shop online at any store that does not accept Apple Pay. This virtual card also comes with its number, security code and expiration date.
Digital Clock Widget: City Digital
A new City Digital widget was introduced in the new iOS 17.4, which will display the time for a specific location. It will be further said to be perfect for travellers for those with connections in different time zones.
More stolen device protection
iOS 17.4 expands Stolen Device Protection options, enabling the user to set a security delay for accessing certain settings, which is always or only when away from familiar locations.
New Battery Health Insights for iPhone 15
For iPhone 15 users, a new Battery Health feature has been incorporated which will provide a straightforward status like ‘Normal’ or ‘Service’, along with detailed information about the battery’s cycle count and capacity of the device.
Home Button in Music and Books Apps
Apple has further added a Home button to the Music and Books apps, which will provide quick access to personalized recommendations and recently played content, which is similar to the previous updates in the Podcasts and Apple TV apps.
Siri’s Multilingual Reading
Siri will support reading messages in multiple languages, like Mandarin dialects, Spanish, and Thai while maintaining its primary language for commands and responses.
Enhanced CarPlay and Maps Integration
For certain vehicles, Apple CarPlay will feature a new instrument cluster experience in Maps, which will provide detailed information about upcoming manoeuvres and allow display customization.
