If you own an iPhone then there is bad news for you. A tiny crack on your iPhone or Apple Watch display is no longer covered under the company’s standard warranty, as per a report. Apple’s standard warranty has never covered damages on the body of the device such as scratches, dents, and broken plastic on ports unless they are due to poor workmanship or defective material. However, the warranty historically covered single hairline cracks that did not spiderweb or have any point of impact.

According to a report from 9to5Mac citing unnamed sources, Apple is instructing its Apple Stores and Apple Authorised Service Providers to consider all hairline cracks as accidental damage, which would mean customers have to pay for repairs. Currently, this policy affects Apple Watches and iPhones, while iPads and Macs are not impacted. Apple is yet to confirm this report.

Outside of warranty, iPhone screen repairs range from Rs 13,200 for the iPhone SE and older models to Rs 37,900 for an iPhone 15 Pro Max. With AppleCare+, that price drops to Rs 2,500 for all models.

Apple has recently made some positive changes regarding repairs thanks in part to pressure from right-to-repair efforts. In 2022, it introduced a Self-Service Repair program that enables users to fix iPhone batteries, screens, and cameras. Additionally, it limited the cost of repairing the back glass of the latest iPhone 15 Pro, which is a significant decrease from the previous cost. In April, the company also announced that it will allow people to repair iPhones with used genuine parts on "select" iPhone models starting this fall.

Meanwhile, Apple has recently published a new document on its website to comply with the UK's Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regulations. According to the document, Apple will be offering security updates for at least five years for the latest iPhone 15 Pro Max. The "defined support period" will extend for a minimum of five years from the initial supply date, which is noted as September 22, 2023. It's worth noting that this support period is two years shorter than that of its primary competitors.
