Apple is all set to host its Worldwide Developer Conference on June 10 to showcase new features that are coming to iPhone and other Apple devices. Now, a report suggests Apple is working on an AI-enabled version of its Siri voice assistant. As per a Bloomberg report, the under development version of Siri will be powered by large language models (LLMs). It will enable users to open documents, send emails, and do a lot more by using their voices.

As per the report, the new version of Siri will only work with Apple apps initially. However, this version of Siri will not arrive with iOS 18 but is likely to be released as an update early next year.

The upcoming assistant will be capable of analysing your phone's activity and automatically activating Siri-controlled features. Initially, it will support "hundreds" of commands but will only be able to process one at a time. However, later on, Siri will be able to handle multiple tasks in a single request. Initially, supported commands will include sending or deleting emails, opening a specific site in Apple News, emailing a web link, or asking for an article summary.

Once multiple commands are enabled, it will be possible to summarise a recorded meeting and then text it to a colleague, all in one request. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, "an iPhone could theoretically be asked to crop a picture and then email it to a friend."

Apple's plans for the next version of Siri include the use of a specific LLM, although it's not yet clear which one. There are reports that Apple has recently struck a deal with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT into iOS 18. Additionally, Apple may be in talks with Google to integrate Gemini AI into iPhone search. It's said that Apple will handle many AI requests on the device itself, reserving cloud usage for more complex commands.
