Apple announced new accessibility features for iPhone and iPad that will be released later this year. These features include Eye Tracking, Music Haptics, Vocal Shortcuts, and others. The Eye Tracking feature will allow users with physical disabilities to control their iPad or iPhone using their eyes.
"We're continuously pushing the boundaries of technology, and these new features reflect our long-standing commitment to delivering the best possible experience to all of our users," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO.
The company has announced that the Music Haptics feature will provide a new way for users who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music by utilising the Taptic Engine in the iPhone. The Vocal Shortcuts feature will enable users to execute tasks by creating a custom sound. Additionally, Vehicle Motion Cues can help reduce motion sickness when using an iPhone or iPad in a moving vehicle.
"These new features will make an impact in the lives of a wide range of users, providing new ways to communicate, control their devices, and move through the world," said Sarah Herrlinger, Apple's senior director of Global Accessibility Policy and Initiatives.
The company announced that additional accessibility features will be added to visionOS. These features will include systemwide Live Captions, aimed at helping users who are deaf or hard of hearing to follow spoken dialogue in live conversations and audio from apps.
In visionOS, Live Captions for FaceTime will allow more users to easily enjoy the experience of connecting and collaborating using their Persona. Apple Vision Pro will also include the ability to move captions using the window bar during Apple Immersive Video, along with support for additional Made for iPhone hearing devices and cochlear hearing processors, the tech giant announced.
Meanwhile, at the Google I/O 2024 event on May 14, Google addressed a major concern for Android users by making several announcements, one of which was the introduction of the Scam Call Alert feature. This feature, demonstrated during the event, displays an alert when users receive calls from private numbers. It is powered by Google's Gemini AI, which uses artificial intelligence to detect and alert users to potential scam calls.
