Google and Samsung have started a new trend by announcing up to seven generations of Android upgrades for the Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 series. The announcements by these manufacturers have assured their potential buyers that their devices will get new software updates at least for seven generations. Their main rival Apple is known to support its devices for longer duration but the company never revealed how many software updates an iPhone will get. However, thanks to a new regulation in the UK, we now know the minimum support window for the iPhone.
Apple recently uploaded a new document to its website in compliance with the UK's Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI). In the document, Apple stated that it will provide security updates for a minimum of five years for the latest iPhone 15 Pro Max. The "defined support period" is a "minimum of five years from the first supply date," which is listed as September 22, 2023. This support period is two years less than that of its main competitors.
The PSTI defines a "security update" as a software update that protects or enhances the security of a product. This includes addressing security issues discovered or reported to the manufacturer. Based on this definition, it is expected that Apple will support some devices for a longer period of time.
Meanwhile, the upcoming WWDC 2024 is expected to focus primarily on AI. The event is scheduled for June 10, and it's anticipated that the company will unveil iOS 18, aiming to enhance user experience on iPhones.
umours suggest that the platform will introduce numerous new features to improve device customization and functionality, all without being dependent on artificial intelligence (AI).
The upcoming iOS 18 is rumoured to tackle one of the major limitations for iPhone users by allowing them to customise their home screen layout for a more personalised experience, similar to what is offered on Android.
