Apple has announced good news for iPhone users. The company is easing some restrictions placed on third-party repairs. As per its latest white paper,  Longevity, by Design, the company will extend software support to third-party replacement batteries and displays installed into iPhones. In simple terms, it means, that if an iPhone user replaces his iPhone’s original battery or display with any third-party parts, Apple will not deactivate True Tone and battery health data for him.

True Tone is a feature on the iPhone that adjusts the display's white balance to match the surrounding environment. Currently, Apple disables this feature if it detects that a third-party replacement screen has been installed. However, later this year, Apple will allow users to activate True Tone using third-party parts for the best performance that can be provided. It's worth noting that True Tone may not display accurate colours or perform well with third-party displays, so users can choose to disable it if the screen doesn't meet their expectations.

Regarding third-party replacement batteries, Apple will display its health metrics but will notify users that it is not able to verify them. Apple's internal analysis revealed that second-hand batteries with manipulated metrics are sometimes sold as new, and as a result, the iPhone's metrics may show the battery's maximum capacity at 100 percent even if its actual state does not reflect that.

Meanwhile, Apple is also making it easier for users to repair their iPhones with used parts. According to the company, selected iPhone models starting this September-October can be repaired using genuine, used parts while retaining full functionality.

“Beginning with select iPhone models this fall, the new process is designed to maintain an iPhone user’s privacy, security, and safety, while offering consumers more options, increasing product longevity, and minimising the environmental impact of a repair,” Apple said via a post in its newsroom.
