Apple held its ‘Let Loose’ event on May 7. During the event, the company announced the launch of the updated iPad Pro. The newly introduced iPad Pro is now powered by an Apple M4 chip and comes in two sizes: 11-inch and 13-inch. It boasts an Ultra Retina XDR display with tandem OLED technology. Here we will look at the key differences between the newly launched iPad Pro and its predecessor, which was launched in 2022, to help you decide whether the new iPad Pro is worth investing in.
2024 iPad Pro vs 2022 iPad Pro: Display and dimensions
The latest version of the iPad Pro is impressively thin and lightweight and boasts a Tandem OLED display. One noticeable change is the new camera positioning. In the 2024 model, the front-facing camera has been moved to the top-center when viewed in landscape orientation. This is a shift from Apple's original iPad configuration, where the camera was centered above the screen when holding it upright in portrait mode.
Compared to its 2022 predecessor, the new iPad Pro is considerably lighter and thinner. The 13-inch model measures just 5.11mm in thickness and weighs only 579g, making it 20 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter than the 12.9-inch model from 2022. Meanwhile, the new 11-inch variant is 5.3mm thick and weighs 444g, making it 10 percent thinner and five percent lighter than the older model.
2024 iPad Pro vs 2022 iPad Pro: Processor
Apple has recently announced a new M4 chip for its latest iPad Pro. This new chip comes with up to a 10-core CPU configuration, which includes four performance cores and six efficiency cores. According to the company, this translates to one and a half times faster performance than the M2 silicon in the 2022 model.
The chip variants for the 2024 model will vary depending on the pricing tier, similar to some older iPad Pro models and MacBooks. The 1TB and 2TB versions will have the 10-core chip, while the 256GB and 512GB models will come with a nine-core M4 with three performance and six efficiency cores.
In contrast, the M2 in the 2022 iPad Pro has an eight-core CPU with four performance and four efficiency cores. It also features a 16-core Neural Engine, 100GB/s memory bandwidth, and either 8GB or 16GB of RAM.
2024 iPad Pro vs 2022 iPad Pro: Accessories
The 2024 iPad Pro has some new accessories that were not available with the previous model. This includes a new Magic Keyboard which is designed to offer a MacBook-like experience. The keyboard features a larger trackpad with haptic feedback and an aluminum palm rest, instead of the previous microfiber-esque material and physically clicking trackpad. The Magic Keyboard also includes a new 14-key function row with shortcuts for tasks like brightness, Spotlight search, Siri/dictation, and media controls.
In addition to this, the Apple Pencil Pro, which works exclusively with the 2024 iPad Pro and iPad Air, has some new features. It looks similar to the previous model but adds a new sensor in its barrel to let you squeeze it. This squeeze gesture can bring up tool palettes or activate shortcuts. Third-party developers can even customise the actions for individual apps. For the first time, it also adds haptic feedback to let you know if your squeeze was accepted or if something you moved has landed in its intended spot. The new Apple Pencil also works with Find My, so you can check on its most recent location in Apple’s location app if you lose it.
Both models also work with the cheaper USB-C Apple Pencil from 2023.
2024 iPad Pro vs 2022 iPad Pro: Price
The latest version of the 11-inch iPad Pro is priced at Rs 99,900, while the 13-inch model is available for Rs 1,29,900. These prices are Rs 18,000 higher than the starting prices of the 2022 models. Additionally, the new Magic Keyboard can be purchased for Rs 33,900, and the Apple Pencil Pro is available for Rs 11,900.
