WhatsApp will start showing ads soon in the 'Status' section, confirms Vice President Chris Daniels

WhatsApp, the mobile messaging service app was creating a buzz, back in August for its reports on displaying ads in the Status section but now the company’s Vice President Chris Daniels has verified that it would be now putting ads in its ‘Status’ feature, which also clears the air on Facebook’s efforts to monetize WhatsApp.

WhatsApp will be using this as a primary monetization method and an opportunity for business to reach people on the platform. This news has been up for quite some time but there is no timeline for this development.

Right now, WhatsApp has over 1.5 billion users globally that include almost 250 million users from India. There have been reports floating that WhatsApp would allow advertisements to be shown on the 'Status' section on the application. The 'Status' section as if now allows users to share photos, text, GIFs and videos that last for 24 hours. Reports suggest that the advertisements could come powered by Facebook’s native advertising system that will aim at helping users participate and experience the businesses using WhatsApp.

This is exactly why WhatsApp's co-founders left the company because doing this would undermine elements of its encryption technology. Reports suggest that the targeted ads will start from 2019 on the platform, which so far has been ad-free.
