Google Maps has taken yet another step towards making Maps your go-to app for restaurant recommendations. The app is now testing a new feature that will show ‘popular dishes' at some restaurants, using images that are crowd-sourced.
Spotted by 9to5 Google, the mapping service already offers a Menu tab, but a new 'Popular Dishes' feature within it will show you what people are ordering from a particular restaurant, complete with photos and reviews.
Currently, the feature appears to be in beta and shows only a few sections from the menu such as appetizers and entrees.
The dishes are displayed in sync with the Material Theme cards with links to more reviews and additional images.
The new feature will scan reviews of the restaurant to find commonly-mentioned dish names, then will add photos included with those reviews to the Popular tab. Whether this is done automatically or humans are involved is currently unclear.
